The new Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Majid Ali, on Tuesday, said no matter how powerful the police are involved in Sayed's murder, they will be brought under the law.
He made these remarks during an interaction with the media at his office on Tuesday afternoon.
He further said: "No matter how powerful any police officer involved in the killing of Sayed is, he will be arrested and brought under the law. There will be no exceptions given. Some overzealous police officers brutally shot Abu Sayeed to protect their own interests.
"If Abu Sayed had not been killed by police fire, the quota reform movement would not have been so turbulent across the country and abroad. It is because we have gained independence through the sacrifice of the blood of thousands of students and people that someone like me, who has been deprived for a long time, could become the commissioner."
The RMP commissioner mentioned: "After assuming the role of the new commissioner on Sunday, I visited Sayeed's home and delivered a message to his family and relatives. Abu Sayed might have been killed, but he has created a history that will be remembered by Bangladesh and the world even hundreds of years later.
"Dr Yunus, for whom members of the American Congress and politicians pay to hear speak, visited Bangladesh and paid respects at Abu Sayed’s grave. I told Abu Sayed’s family, you can be proud of him. He is now not just the son of Babanpur village in Pirganj—he resonates in the hearts of hundreds of millions of democracy-loving people around the world."
He further added: "Since joining, we have started initiatives to protect people’s lives and properties and provide all kinds of facilities to the public. I have told the police members right after joining to serve and assist people in distress as servants of the public, or strict actions will be taken without any delay."
