The newly appointed Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Md Tajul Islam, has said that the defendants in genocide cases, including Sheikh Hasina, can hire foreign lawyers during their trial in the tribunal.
Assuring that the prosecution team will have no objection in this regard, Tajul said that the prosecution team will do whatever is necessary in the interest of ensuring justice.
The chief prosecutor of ICT made the statement on Monday in response to questions from journalists at the prosecution office of the ICT.
Tajul said: "The prosecution team has visited several hospitals and is collecting information. Requests for information have also been made to the hospital administrators. Today, more hospitals will be visited."
He further mentioned that, in the interest of the investigation, letters are being sent to various institutions, including district commissioners, media outlets, and hospitals, for access to videos and photographs.
Tajul Islam emphasized that this initiative is aimed at ensuring transparency in the investigation, so that there are no questions regarding the trial process.
“The victims are eagerly awaiting justice for the genocide, and the witnesses are also willing to participate. Efforts are ongoing to start the trial process while the evidence is still fresh,” he added.
Tajul also clarified that there is no political motive behind this trial under the current government. “The goal is to ensure justice for the brutalities that occurred with the students and the public, without any political ambitions.”
