Mahfuz Alam: Govt to uphold rule of law, rejects mob justice

Condemning mob justice as unacceptable, Mahfuz Alam, special assistant to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, has promised that action will be taken according to the law.

The people should not hold accountable those who had been accomplices to the autocrat; they must be handed over to law enforcement, Mahfuz Alam, also known as Mahfuz Abdullah, told journalists on Sunday after a dialogue between students, the chief adviser and other advisers to mark one month of the interim government.

He said the government was strict on the issue, adding that it had always maintained a firm stance to ensure that the public did not resort to mob justice.

During the discussion session, student leaders had raised concerns about student politics on campuses.

Mahfuz said discussions were underway about this, adding that students were suggesting that the Chhatra League should not return to educational institutions. “Talks are ongoing about in which format student politics should be practised on campus… the government will make a decision later.”

Mahfuz, quoting the chief adviser, said Dhaka wanted good relations with New Delhi, but it should be based on fairness and equality.
