The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained Abdullahil Kafi, the additional superintendent of police (Crime and Ops) in Dhaka district, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday.
He was accused of killing and burning students and people on August 5 in Ashulia.
According to DB sources, they received a tip-off about Abdullahil Kafi's escape.
After a day filled with dramatic events, a team was able to detain him at the Shahjalal Airport.
DMP’s Joint Commissioner (DB-North) Rabbiul Hossain Bhuiyan told media at 11pm that Kafi needs to be interrogated regarding the incident in Ashulia.
“He is being brought to the DB office for questioning, but we have not yet been able to take him into custody.”
Law enforcement authorities reported that Kafi faces serious charges, accused of killing and burning students and people in Ashulia, Dhaka, on August 5.
A chilling video showing multiple blood-sustained dead bodies piled on a van, with two individuals wearing police jackets throwing another body onto the pile, went viral on social media since Friday.
Upon investigation, it was found that the location in the video is near Ashulia police station in Baipail, Savar.
The dead bodies were burned down later in a police van.
At least 31 people were reported dead during the clashes in Savar on August 5, 2024.
Additionally, at least 15 more died from severe injuries while undergoing treatment.
Information has been confirmed on the deaths of at least 45 people on that day, with many others being treated for gunshot wounds in hospitals.
