Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan appointed as 30th DU VC

Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has been appointed as the 30th vice-chancellor of Dhaka University.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin, also the chancellor of the university, made the appointment, sources at the Bangabhaban confirmed Dhaka Tribune on Monday. 

Since August 15 of this year, Professor Niaz Ahmed has been serving as the acting vice-chancellor of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), following the student-led revolution. 

Previously, he held the position of pro vice-chancellor at the same university. In addition, he chaired the Development Studies Department at Dhaka University.

Professor Ahmed has also contributed as a senior academic adviser at the National Defence College (NDC) and the Brac Institute of Governance and Development.

His academic journey includes higher studies and research at the University of Oxford, the University of Wales Swansea, and the Asian Institute of Technology. 

Throughout his career, he has gained a diverse range of experiences in both academia and development management across Bangladesh, Thailand, and the UK.

Professor Niaz Ahmed completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Public Administration from Chittagong University and later earned his PhD in Development Studies from the University of Wales, Swansea. 

He has been a prolific author, contributing extensively to fields such as environment, natural resource management, and social and community development.

His appointment as acting vice-chancellor of DU came after the resignation of Professor Maksud Kamal, the university's 29th vice-chancellor, on August 10.
