Md Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, two key figures in the recent uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime, and now advisors in Bangladesh’s newly formed interim government, have been given key roles in the Cabinet.
Nahid will oversee the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry, while Asif will lead the Ministry of Youth and Sports, according to a circular issued on Friday.
Nahid is a student activist who was one of the main leaders of the quota reform movement, which later turned into a non-cooperation movement, leading to the Hasina government's end.
He was born in Dhaka in 1998 and is a sociology student from the 2016-17 session at Dhaka University.
Asif was another key coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination movement.
Hailing from Comilla, Asif is a linguistics student from the 2017-18 session at DU.
He was also president of the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad of DU.
Zunaid Ahmed Palak was the state minister for ICT and Nazmul Hassan Papon was the sports minister in Hasina's Cabinet.
