Jamaat chief visits grave of Abu Sayed

Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has visited the grave of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayed, who was shot dead by the police during the quota movement.

He came to Sayed's house in Babanpur village of Zafarpara of Pirganj upazila, 60km away from Rangpur city on Wednesday ​​at 11am.  He offered prayers at Sayed’s grave.

He met Sayed's father Maqbul Hossain, mother Monowara Begum and other relatives. At this time, Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced Tk1 lakh in cash to the family of Shaheed Abu Sayed and pledged to stay with his family for life. 

The Jamaat amir said: "Martyr Abu Sayed is a national hero. The scene of his extreme bravery was seen by the whole country and even the whole world. His sacrifice has given us new inspiration.” 

He demanded that all those involved in the killings in the quota reform movement be brought to justice.

Before this, Dr Shafiqur Rahman came to Pirganj Jafarpara Kamil Madrasa field by helicopter. 

He addressed a short gathering there. In the gathering, he urged everyone to keep a watchful eye on those who create unstable environment in the country. At this time, local leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, allied organizations and local public were present.

On July 16, Abu Sayed, one of the organizers of the anti-quota movement and a 12th batch student of English department in Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by the police. The movement gained a new dimension when the video of the shooting went viral in the media including social media at home and abroad.
