Army chief: Normalcy will be restored soon

Bangladesh Army Chief of Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman has said that the country’s situation is improving and expressed hope that normalcy will return soon.

He also emphasized that firm action will be taken against those involved in vandalism and looting following the resignation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday evening at the Army Headquarters in the capital, General Waker-Uz-Zaman said: “Today, I had a meeting with my commanders and GOCs. The situation is improving and should return to normal within three or four days. We will not spare those who have committed crimes. Legal action will certainly be taken against them.”

General Waker mentioned that he had spoken with Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, who is set to assume the role of head of the interim government on Thursday.

He said: “I believe Dr Yunus is very much interested in taking on this responsibility. I am confident he will guide us towards a democratic process, and we will benefit from his leadership.”

Dr Yunus is expected to arrive in Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon, and the army will receive him at the airport.

General Waker expressed optimism that political parties, students, and citizens will support Dr Yunus in his new role.

The army chief also praised the efforts of students in controlling the situation and preventing looting, saying: “We welcome their work. May they continue these good efforts.”

Addressing rumors about the Army, General Waker urged the media not to publish unverified news.

He also noted that the reformation of the police force has already begun, with a new police chief appointed, and expressed hope that the police would soon operate professionally.

In response to journalists' questions, General Waker confirmed that the army is patrolling the entire country.

He expressed condolences for those who have lost their lives due to ongoing looting and killing in some areas, saying: “Political leaders promised that such incidents would not happen. If there is any failure, it is mine.”
