Students guard, clean fire-ravaged Mirpur police station

Students from various educational institutions gathered in front of Mirpur model police station on Tuesday and cleaned up the burnt debris with the help of locals.

Amid celebrations of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, some criminals on Monday looted various police stations and other buildings, setting fire to several stations, including Mirpur model police station in the capital, which was destroyed by fire, leaving nothing intact.

During a visit to the station, it was found that both floors of the two-storey police station were burnt.

Various furniture and cars in front of the police station were burnt to ashes. Students have been guarding the police station since morning. In the meantime, an army team came and visited the police station.

The students recovered a shotgun, a walkie-talkie, some rubber bullets and tear gas shells from the burnt police station.

Some removed the burnt part of the police station lying on the road with a broom so the vehicles could run normally. Later, they went inside the police station and tried to clean it up.

Fahim, a student of Birshreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College, said: "We were a little late in buying brooms. But we have completed the work of clearing the road. Let's see how clean we can keep inside.”

Meherun Mohua, a student of Mirpur Model College University, said: "We have taken position here so that no one can take anything else. The police station suffered considerable damage. We want this police station to be renovated soon. We will be on the sidelines.”

According to eyewitnesses, a group of people set fire to the police station shortly Monday evening. When the police fled, they looted some motorcycles in front of the police station. Later, the law enforcers fired several rounds to take control of the situation, but could not help.
