A Hindu family's home in Dhamrai, Dhaka, was attacked by a group of 100-150 miscreants who vandalized their property and attempted to damage a temple within the residence.
The incident took place around 6pm on Monday in the Barabaria area of Gangutia Union.
According to witnesses, the attack was led allegedly by local BNP leader Azizul Haque, who led a procession to the house before launching the assault.
Upon visiting the site, it was seen that the main iron gate of the house was broken, glass windows of three rooms next to the balcony were shattered, and glass fragments were scattered throughout the house.
A television inside the house was found smashed, and several chairs in front of the Durga temple were also damaged. Additionally, all the windows of two private cars parked in the garage were shattered.
Members of the family described the experience, and said that the group of attackers shouted abuses and began destroying their property. The assault lasted for about 15-20 minutes before the attackers fled the scene.
Meena Rani Das, the homeowner, said: "We were at home as usual when suddenly a group of 100-150 people came and started vandalizing our property. We ran from one room to another in fear. They continued breaking things, and we were so scared that we stayed quietly in another room. They hurled many abuses, and after about 10-15 minutes, they left. They also tried to break into the temple but couldn't get past the lock."
Her son, Dr Ananta Das, said: "We were sitting inside the house when we heard banging at the gate. Hearing that, we took shelter in another room. The attackers entered the balcony and broke all the windows. They could not enter the temple due to the lock but broke chairs and other furniture. We believe this attack was motivated by communal reasons. They used offensive slurs. We feel very unsafe."
