Mass celebrations erupt in Dhaka as Awami League regime ends

Dhaka turned into a sea of people defying curfew in the afternoon to celebrate the news of the Awami League regime coming to an end.

Thousands gathered in areas like Science Lab, Dhanmondi, Mirpur, Mohammadpur, and Jatrabari. Even hospital staff were seen dancing in the streets, and sick women came out in wheelchairs.

Young men and women travelled by rickshaw across the capital, carrying flags on their hands and heads. People were seen hugging each other in jubilation.

Mehedi Hasan Rony, a resident of Dhanmondi, said: "I can't describe how happy I feel. It will take a few days to sink in."

The crowds chanted various slogans calling for the government's downfall, including "We won, we won," "Students' victory," and patriotic chants.

Meanwhile, there were also reports of widespread vandalism and arson in several parts of Dhaka. Many people were seen participating in looting anything they can grab from Ganabhaban.

Chief of Army Staff General Wakar-Uz-Zaman announced that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had resigned. He stated, "A political transition is underway; an interim government will be formed. All perpetrators will face justice. Trust the army; we have consulted with political leaders." The Army Chief urged the public to maintain peace and refrain from conflict.

At 2:30pm, a military helicopter departed from Bangabhaban to India with Sheikh Hasina, accompanied by her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana.
