Prices surge in Dhaka kitchen markets

Residents once again rushed to kitchen markets of the capital to stock up on fresh vegetables, chicken and fish during the two hours from 3pm to 5pm when the curfew was lifted on Sunday.

In light of the high demand and low supply, prices continued to surge at the markets. Most vegetables were being sold at Tk10-20 more than on Thursday.

Sellers claimed that the prices has increased due to shortages in the wholesale market.

Zaman, a vegetable seller at the Mohammadpur Town Hall Market, said: “We are  buying at a slightly higher price, thus we have to sell higher.”

Tomato surged by Tk80 per kg in last 2 days. Green Papaya increased from Tk60 to Tk70.

The price of fish has also increased due to supply shortages.  On the other hand, the price of chicken has been relatively stable.

Chicken seller Tamizuddin said: “We are selling chickens that we brought previously.”

Although price of broiler chicken increased by Tk20 per kg, the price of others remained the same as Thursday.

Mizan, a resident of Mohammadpur, said: “The prices are slightly higher than last Tuesday. However, today I brought vegetables and chicken for the next 5 days.”
