The agitating students, who have been demanding the reformation of the quota system in government jobs, have announced a new program.
They have announced to hold demonstrations and rallies in all educational institutions of the country at 3pm on Tuesday, protesting the attack of the Chhatra League on students across Bangladesh.
Nahidul Islam, one of the coordinators of the anti-quota movement, announced the program at Dhaka University around 9:30pm on Monday.
“Today, we were attacked by outsiders in a planned way. How do outsiders attack students when there is a proctor? The government is trying to violently suppress this movement.”
Earlier in the day, the Dhaka University unit of the Chhatra League took full control of the DU campus after an hour-long clash and chase counter-chase with agitated students protesting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's remarks about their movement.
Witnesses said after the procession around 3pm Monday, a section of the protesters went to DU’s Bijoy Ekattor Hall demanding quota reform.
When they tried to enter the gate of the hall, Chhatra League activists threw shoes at them. Then the protesters, in response, threw brickbats -- resulting in a clash.
Being chased, the protesters moved towards the Central Shaheed Minar through Fuller Road and the VC Chattar.
After the incident, the Chhatra League activists took full control of the campus after almost an hour.
Over 200 people were injured in the clashes.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders accused quota protesters of attacking students who refused to join their rallies at Dhaka University’s Bijoy Ekattor Hall.
According to Chhatra League leaders, the protesters, who claimed to be conducting a non-violent movement, were armed with sticks and rods.
Referring to visuals, Chhatra League leaders said protesters demanding quota reforms “vandalized the front gate of the hall.” Several activists and general students were assaulted as they declined to join the quota protests, they said.
