Clashes at DU: Shahidullah Hall area turns into battleground

Ongoing clashes between protesters demanding quota reform and Chhatra League leaders and activists have turned the Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall area of Dhaka University into a battleground.

The violence, which began around 3pm in front of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, spread to various parts of the campus, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute.

Chhatra League activists took position on the road outside Shahidullah Hall while protesters remained inside the hall. Both groups pelted bricks at each other.

At least two explosions were reported in the area.

The situation escalated further as repeated chases and counter-chases occurred.

At 6:15pm, observers noted that bricks and stones were being hurled from the roof of Shahidullah Hall, hindering the advance of Chhatra League activists who were gathering at Doel Chattar.

At 6:45pm, police arrived and taken positions at key locations on the campus to control the situation.

Clashes have also erupted between Shahidullah Hall and the Burn Institute, where Chhatra League leaders and activists, armed with helmets and sticks, attempted to enter the hall.

Protesters at the hall gate and on the roof responded by throwing bricks and stones, creating a tense standoff. Police presence was notably absent in this area as well.

At DMCH, around 220 injured individuals received treatment.

The violence continued outside Dhaka Medical, where those who brought the injured students were chased away by Chhatra League activists.

The clashes broke out after the students held a rally protesting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's remarks about their movement around 3pm.

The incidents were reported from DU’s Bijoy Ekattor Hall, VC Chattar, Neelkhet intersection, and the surrounding areas.

Students from Dhaka University and other universities and colleges across the country erupted in protest late on Sunday, sparked by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's criticism of the movement opposing the reinstatement of quotas in government jobs.

The students responding to a call from the Students Against Discrimination movement, took to the streets in a protest march at around 10:45pm.

Students from all dorms, including the women's halls, participated in the march.

Earlier in the afternoon, during a press conference at Ganabhaban regarding her visit to China, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina criticized those opposing quotas for freedom fighters' descendants.
