A legal notice has been served to the government demanding the cancellation of the rail transit deal connecting India's northeastern states with Bangladesh.
The notice has been sent to the secretaries of the Railway Ministry, Home Ministry, Foreign Affairs Ministry and Law Ministry.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Mahmudul Hasan sent the notice through a registry post on Wednesday.
The notice says that it has been sent to protect the sovereignty of Bangladesh and to avoid a military conflict between Bangladesh and China in the future.
According to the notice, since independence in 1971, Bangladesh has been following the policy of "friendship with all, enmity with none" formulated by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Besides, Bangladesh has been following the policy of "Balance of Power" with powerful states to protect itself from international conflicts and violence.
But in June 2024, Bangladesh's "Balance of Power" policy was threatened by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Central Government of India and Bangladesh regarding rail transit. As a result, Bangladesh's sovereignty is undermined in India's internal conflict, and there is a risk of Bangladesh's military conflict with China in the future, it added.
Therefore, it requested to cancel this railway transit agreement within 7 days of receiving the legal notice considering the deal as a threat to the sovereignty of Bangladesh and creating a military conflict with China in the future.
