Fake info in NIDs: Gen Aziz's brothers, Mosleh's children to face EC probe

A probe body has been formed to investigate the matter of former army chief General (retd) Aziz Ahmed's brothers and Bangabandhu's killer Mosleh Uddin's children using false information to obtain their National Identity Cards (NID).

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said this while responding to questions from the journalists at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon on Monday.

“I have come to know that former army chief Aziz's brothers, Bangabandhu's killer Mosleh Uddin's family, and former prime minister Khaleda Zia's political advisor late Harish Chowdhury had gotten NID cards using false information. The matter came to light after almost 20-25 years. Now two investigation committees have been formed to look into the matter,” he said.

According to media reports, Aziz Ahmed's two brothers Haris Ahmed and Tofael Ahmed alias Joseph have changed their names as well as their parents.

Haris Ahmed changed his name to Mohammad Hasan, while Joseph changed his name to Tanvir Ahmed Tanjeel. It was alleged that Aziz Ahmed recommended changing their NID details.

Besides, the Ministry of Home Affairs has recently asked the Election Commission to take legal action against the six children of Moslem Uddin, a convicted killer of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for using a fake name of their father to obtain NID cards.

The absconding Mosleh Uddin was using Md Rafiqul Islam Khan as his fake name.

The NID branch of the Election Commission has launched an investigation at the request of the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On May 20, the US State Department publicly termed former Army Chief General (Retd) Aziz Ahmed “corrupt” due to his involvement in significant corruption.

They made the public announcement under Section 7031(c) of the Foreign Operations, and Related Program Appropriations Act.

This is the first time any Bangladeshi has been publicly termed a “corrupt” person by the US administration.
