Home Minister: Market syndicates more dangerous than extortion

Market syndicates are more dangerous than extortion, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said.

“A group of traders is increasing the prices of goods in the hope of getting more profit in the future,” he said while inaugurating the Post Graduate Diploma in Cyber Security course at Police Staff College Bangladesh on Saturday.

He said police and RAB are in a tough position to prevent extortion. “We have calculated how much money is extorted from a truck to travelling from Jessore to Dhaka. The prices of essential commodities in Dhaka rise not only due to extortion but also for higher profits. A special police operation is currently underway to combat extortion."

Regarding the recent fires in Dhaka, the home minister said those are “mere accidents.”

No evidence of sabotage was found. However, it is possible to prevent fire if people are careful, he added.
