JnU student's death: VC denies receiving record of complaint

Following the death of a Jagannath University (JnU) student on Friday, the university's Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Sadeka Halim said she did not receive any record of the complaint that Fairuz Abontika had mentioned on her Facebook status.

"The report that Fairuz mentioned was not given to me. She said she was humiliated. I did not receive the record of that complaint. The accused assistant proctor has been relieved of his duties. Until the investigation report comes, he will not be involved in any work of the university,” she said.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Sadeka Halim made the comments around midnight after she assured the protesting students of JnU that the investigation into the matter would be completed within seven days.

"I am trying to do everything for the safety of the students in this short time. Five members of the proctorial body, including the chief, are new. Every report of the sexual harassment investigation committee that has been completed will be resolved in the next syndicate. Strict action will be taken,” she added.

In this regard, university Proctor Jahangir Hossain said: "The complaint has been found. It's a very old file. That's why it took time to search for it. I reported the matter to the vice chancellor.”

Fairuz Abontika, a student of JnU’s law department, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room in Comilla on Friday night.

Her body was found at around 10pm at her parent’s house in Bagichagaon area of the district.

Abontika’s friends and fellow students said she died after posting a status on Facebook, where she blamed a classmate for sexually harassing her.

They also said that an assistant proctor of the university had verbally abused Abontika when she complained about that classmate to him.

After knowing about Abontika’s death, JnU students gathered in front of the campus and demonstrated.
