Home Minister: Trial of Pilkhana carnage case to be completed soon

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that the trial of the 2009 Pilkhana carnage case will end soon.

“There was a big massacre in Pilkhana. Completing the investigation was a huge task. You have already seen the preliminary trial, and the final trial will end soon as well. It entirely depends on judicial proceedings,” he said.

The home minister made the comments after laying floral wreaths at the graves of the martyrs of the Pilkhana massacre at Banani Military Graveyard on Sunday morning.

In response to the question of whether the relatives of the murdered soldiers will be able to see the final verdict, the home minister said: “I also hope for a speedy trial. But only the judges know when it will end.”

“Our court is independent, and we expect a fair trial accordingly,” he added.

Bangladesh is observing the 15th martyrdom anniversary of the 2009 Pilkhana carnage that left 74 people, including 57 army officers killed.

Marking the day, tributes were paid to the victims by placing wreaths on their graves at Banani Military Graveyard at 9:08am on Sunday.

On February 25, 2009, several hundred Bangladesh Rifles or BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh) men staged an armed revolt at the Darbar Hall of the force's Pilkhana Headquarters in Dhaka. They killed 74 people, including 57 army officers.

The mutiny ended the following day with the surrender of firearms, ammunition, and grenades through a negotiation between the government and the BDR rebels.
