A complaint has been filed with Gacha police station in connection with vandalism carried out in two garment factories by agitated garment workers following the death of a fellow female worker in Kunia Taragach area in Gazipur city.
As the death news of Monira Begum, 30, spread among the workers, they carried out vandalism at the Padma Satel Arab Fashions Ltd.
The workers broke windows, furniture, and vehicles kept inside the factories.
Jewel, administrative manager of the factory filed the complaint with the police station in the evening against unidentified people.
Jabed Hossain Bhuiyan, the director of the factory, confirmed the matter.
He also said: “After the worker was killed by the vehicle, some of the protesting workers were chased by the police and tried to break the main gate of both our factories and enter inside.”
At one point they broke through the main gate and called upon the peaceful workers of the factory to stop work and participate in the protest with them. When the security personnel in-charge of the factory prevented them, the agitated workers pelted bricks and stones at the factory and broke the doors and windows. Meanwhile, three pickups, private cars and microbus parked inside the factory were vandalized.
He also said outsiders may have fueled the movement to divert workers to prevent accidents.
Readymade garments (RMG) workers from multiple factories blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for four hours after the female worker was killed after being hit by a garbage truck of the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) in the Kunia area of the city around 7:35am.
