Police have arrested a leader of local Awami League from Charwapda union of Subarnachar upazila in Noakhali in connection with raping a woman and her 12-year old daughter.
The arrestee is Abul Khayer Munshi, former member of 5 no ward and also president of Awami League unit of the union parishad.
The rape survivor woman filed a case against three people in connection with the incident on Tuesday.
Abul Khayer Munshi has been made the main accused in the case.
A team of police conducted a drive in Kadir Hanif area of the sadar upazila around 1:30pm and arrested Abul Khayer, said Bijoya Sen, additional superintendent of police.
The arrestee has been brought to Char Jabbar police station after the arrest, said the police official.
Besides, a drive is underway to arrest two other accused.
Meanwhile, Hanif Chowdhury, general secretary of Subarnachar upazila unit Awami League said that organizational action will be taken against Abul Khayer for being involved in unethical activities.
The woman and her daughter were raped by a three-member thief gang in Subarnachar upazila in Noakhali.
Two of the thieves gang-raped the woman and one of them raped her daughter, who is a fifth grader.
At that time, a pair of gold nose rings, earrings and Tk17,225 were stolen from the house.
The incident took place at a new house in Charkaji Mokhles village around 2am on Tuesday.
According to police and locals, the woman was living with three of her children at that house and her husband was away for work.
At around 2am, the thieves entered the house, tied the housewife's hands, feet, and face, and stole the gold and cash from the house.
Hearing their screams, the neighbors cordoned off the house and informed the matter to Charjabbar police station, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam.
A case was filed, said the OC.
Earlier on Monday, a court sentenced 10 individuals to death and six others to life imprisonment in connection with the rape of a housewife in Subarnachar upazila on the night of the 11th general election on December 30, 2018.
