The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has conducted a raid at the Mirpur office of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and detained a broker on charges of harassing service seekers.
The Enforcement Unit of the ACC conducted the operation Sunday and handed over the broker to an executive magistrate. The ACC said they conducted the raid after receiving complaints from service seekers about being harassed by brokers at Mirpur BRTA.
The ACC said that their team, under the guise of service seekers, was approached by several brokers who tried to persuade the team to give them speed money and get the work done quickly. The brokers promised to have BRTA representatives complete the work. Later, one of the brokers was detained, and the ACC team requested that the director of the engineering unit of BRTA take action against the detainee.
Besides, the ACC team warned the officials of the concerned departments of the BRTA regarding the presence of brokers on their office premises. The director of the engineering department assured the ACC team that appropriate measures would be taken against the brokers and those associated with them.
The Enforcement Unit will verify the information and records collected during the operation and submit a report to the commission, ACC sources said.
Meanwhile, ACC's integrated office in Noakhali conducted another raid to inspect the construction work of the Gazirhat Dhalua to Magura Bazar road in Senbag Upazila Sunday.
ACC sources said that they received complaints of irregularities at the road construction, and thus the raid was conducted to inspect the pitch-pouring in the section.
The team collected samples from the construction site in the presence of an engineer.
However, primarily the ACC team termed the construction work satisfactory. The team will submit the final report to the commission after analyzing the sample, sources added.
Apart from this, the anti-graft body also wrote to four government offices to take the necessary steps against corruption.
