At least 513 students committed suicide across Bangladesh in the last year, according to a survey by the non-governmental organization Aachol Foundation.
Of the 513, there were 227 school students, 140 college students, 98 university students, and 48 madrasa students.
Besides, 204 were male students and 309 were female students among the deaths.
The figure highlighted a slight decrease from 2022, when 532 students from various educational institutions died by suicide.
Main reason behind suicide cases
“Emotional distress” has been emerged as the primary reason behind student suicides in Bangladesh last year, contributing to over 32.2% (165 cases) of these tragedies.
Relationships and affairs were the second leading reason. Some 14.8% of incidents were reported due to this reason.
Mental health issues were identified in 9.9% of the cases, while domestic arguments and abuse contributed to 6.2% and 1.4% of the suicides.
Besides, family pressure regarding studies led to 4.5% of the cases, while exam failures and underachievement in public exams were responsible for 3.4% and 1.8% of the suicides.
Along with this, 2.5% committed suicide due to sexual harassment while 0.8% due to humiliation.
Dhaka division records highest suicide cases
In 2023, the Dhaka division saw the highest number of student suicides among eight divisions. A total of 149 cases were reported in Dhaka while 89 cases in Chittagong.
Besides, Rajshahi division recorded 77 cases, Khulna division 64, Barisal and Rangpur division 43, Mymensingh division 36 cases.
Besides, 12 students committed suicide in Sylhet.
There are suicide cases in Dhaka city due to the lack of a supportive environment for students to study and grow, according to experts.
