Daulatdia-Paturia ferry service resumes

Ferry service on the Daulatdia-Paturia route resumed after a suspension of seven hours on Thursday due to dense fog, while the Met Office said the cold conditions may prevail for the next 24 hours.

Abdus Salam, manager of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at the Aricha point, said the ferry service was suspended at 3am owing to poor visibility.

Four ferries — Hamidur Rahman, Banalata, Bir Shreshtha Jahangir, and Hasna Hena — remained stranded in the middle of the Padma River, while ten ferries were anchored at the ferry jetties.

Over 350 vehicles, including goods-carrying ones, were stranded at the jetties following the suspension of ferry services. The ferries started to operate around 9am, officials said.

In its bulletin, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said cold conditions are likely to prevail across the country in the next 24 hours.

The lowest temperature in the country on Thursday was recorded at 10.3°C at Nikli in Kishoreganj. The temperature may rise Saturday, said Afroza Sultana, assistant meteorologist at BMD.

Moderate to thick fog may occur over the country from midnight to morning, and it may continue till noon in some places, the Met Office further said.

In Dhaka, the lowest temperature was recorded at 14.2°C on Thursday.

In Kurigram, the bone-chilling cold disrupted the daily activities of the commoners. People on the streets were seen lighting fires to keep themselves warm as the sun remained invisible due to dense fog.

The temperature was recorded at 11.5 degrees Celsius in the district on Thursday, said Subal Chandra Sarkar, in charge of the Rajarhat Weather Observatory.

"The cold-day situation may prevail for two more days," he said.

In Naogaon, the lowest temperature was recorded at 10.7°C. Met Office sources said the temperature in the district is decreasing every day.

According to the Met Office, air navigation and inland river transport may be disrupted temporarily due to fog in the next 24 hours.

The nighttime temperature may fall slightly over the country, the daytime temperature may fall slightly over the southern part, and it may remain nearly unchanged elsewhere in the country.

The weather may remain dry, with temporary partly cloudy skies over the country.
