Members of law enforcement agencies detained Rajshahi City Corporation panel mayor Nizamul Azim early Saturday allegedly on allegations of coercing Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) cardholders to vote for a specific candidate in the ongoing general election.
Nizam, also 21 no ward councillor and a local Awami League leader, was held from his residence at Sagar Para area in Rajshahi city and was kept under the custody of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), said Rajshahi additional district magistrate Sabiha Sultana.
The arrest was made after the 14-party alliance candidate Fazle Hossain Badsha submitted a complaint with the returning officer, alleging that Nizam was engaged in intimidating voters.
He confiscated the TCB cards and other documents from different government allowances recipients of Sagarpara and asked them to vote for certain a candidate, the complaint said.
“As the allegation against him was found to be true in primary investigation, he was arrested at around 3:00am,” she said.
