The Election Inquiry Committee on Saturday severed show cause notice to Daudkandi Upazila Parishad Chairman Mohammad Ali Sumon for allegedly breaching the electoral code of conduct by using state facilities for campaigning for an independent candidate.
He was campaigning for an independent candidate while enjoying state privileges and residing in a government residence.
Daudkandi Senior Assistant Judge Mukta Rani issued the notice and asked him to explain his position in person or send a representative to the Election Inquiry Committee’s temporary office at 12pm on Tuesday.
The show-cause notice says the Awami League candidate for Comilla-1 Abdus Sabur’s election management committee’s chief coordinator Prof Dr Abdul Mannan Joy, filed the complaint against Mohammad Ali Sumon for violating the electoral code of conduct.
The main allegation is that he used government residence, office and other facilities to campaign for an independent candidate and made defamatory and provocative statements against the complainant on social media, the notice added.
The 12th parliamentary election is scheduled to be held on January 7.
