National polls: Printing of ballot papers begins

Election Commission Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said the printing of ballots started immediately after the finalization of the candidate list in three government presses.

"We have received the list of candidates from 300 constituencies after allotment of symbols. The process of printing the ballots has started in three government presses," he said this while talking to reporters on Tuesday.

Ashok Kumar Debnath said: "Any areas where there are pending cases in the elections, those will be printed a little later. We want to finish ballot printing by December 31. In areas where there are no pending cases, those will be printed first.

“In cases where there are pending matters, such as appeals from the high court or the possibility of someone's candidacy being canceled, if printing is done earlier, it may need to be reprinted, resulting in the earlier ones being invalidated. Therefore, these areas will be printed last,” he added.

He said that there are more than 40 seats with pending cases.

The additional secretary said: "We have provided Tk33 crore to buy paper for ballot printing at Bangladesh Government Press. So far, this quantity has been allocated."

"As many as the number of voters, that many ballots will be printed. After December 25, the ballots will be sent to the Returning Officer's office at the district level," he added.

In response to a question about how security is being considered, they said: "Providing security is law enforcement agencies’ responsibility. The ballots will be transported with security."

"We have received all the electoral materials. The stamps will reach us within the next two or three days. There is an Electoral Inquiry Committee and magistrates to ensure that the electoral code of conduct is properly followed, and they are working at the field level."
