Mymensingh-9: Awami League MP aspirant regains candidacy

The High Court on Monday stayed the Election Commission's order canceling Awami League candidate Major General (Retd.) MA Salam's candidacy in Mymensingh-9 Constituency on charges of being a loan defaulter.

The High Court bench of Justice Abu Taher Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order.

Lawyers Prabir Niyogi and Matiur Rahman Bh uiyan attended the court hearing on his behalf.

Earlier, the returning officer declared the candidacy of Awami League candidate MA Salam in Mymensingh-9 constituency valid after verifying the nomination papers.

Anwarul Abedin Khan, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the same seat, filed an appeal in the Election Commission. He became an independent candidate after not getting the party's nomination.

The Election Commission (EC) deemed the returning officer's evaluation invalid at the hearing held on December 15. Later, MA Salam filed a writ in the High Court.
