Funeral of Barrister Mainul Hosein completed in Supreme Court

The namaz-e-janaza of Barrister Mainul Hosein, former adviser to a caretaker government, has been completed in the Supreme Court on Sunday.

Taking part in the funeral, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan announced that all the High Court benches will remain closed for the death of Barrister Mainul Hosein from 2pm.

Earlier, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan announced the closure of the proceedings of the Appellate Division from 11am-1pm on Sunday, paying respect to Barrister Mainul.

When the proceedings of the Appellate Division started Sunday morning, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajol, the former secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, said that the former elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Barrister Mainul Hosein, had contributed a lot to establish the independence of the judiciary, rule of law, and human rights.

The Supreme Court of the country also honoured the death of former presidents of the bar.

After that, the chief justice consulted with the other judges of the Appellate Division and said that the proceedings in the Appellate Division would be closed after 11pm.

Barrister Mainul Hosein, former adviser to a caretaker government, passed away on Saturday.

He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital, reports media.

He battled cancer for the past year.

Barrister Mainul Hosein was a prominent Bangladeshi lawyer, politician, and publisher of the daily newspaper The New Nation.

He also served as the former chairman of the editorial board of The Daily Ittefaq.

During January 2007 to January 2008, he served as the law, information, and land adviser to the caretaker government of Bangladesh.

Mainul Hosein was elected to Parliament in 1973, representing his village constituency in Bhandaria, Pirojpur district, as a member of the Awami League.

In May 1975, he, along with General Osmani, resigned from Parliament after Sheikh Mujib abolished democracy in the country and established a one-party system of government through the Fourth Amendment to the constitution.

Following the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975, Mainul joined the Democratic League, led by Khondaker Moshtaq Ahmad, one of the conspirators of Mujib's assassination.

In September 2019, Barrister Mainul Hosein was jailed in a defamation case filed by journalist Masuda Bhatti.
