EC Alamgir: Open to readjusting election schedule

The Election Commission is willing to adjust the election schedule within the constitutional limits and is encouraging the political parties who have not yet participated to take part in the upcoming election.

Election Commissioner (EC) Md Alamgir said this during a discussion meeting regarding the upcoming polls in Madaripur on Tuesday.

"The commission is inviting the BNP to participate in the election. Not only the BNP, but 44 political parties have been invited to participate in the national parliamentary election. If the BNP wants to participate in the election, it can be postponed. The Election Commission agrees to this," he said.

Referring to the absence of international pressure, he said: "Which parties will participate in the election is their decision. This decision cannot be imposed by another. Based on practical experience, not all types of political parties participate in an election.”

He further said: "The military may be involved in the election. This is a tentative statement as no final decision has been made. However, like in past national elections, we anticipate military presence."

The election commissioner said: "Developing countries around the world have not said they will not send observers. We have received many lists from them."
