Loud noises of heavy gunfire and explosions have again rocked the areas alongside the zero line of Tumbru border of Ghumdhum in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban.
Shafiqul Islam a member of Ghumdhum Union Parishad's Ward No one in Naikhongchhari said: "After a long time, we heard the sound of heavy gunfire from Myanmar at the Tumbru border. People living nearby are fearful, and panic has spread after the firing. Twenty families close to the border in my area have been evacuated and are safe."
People at the border heard heavy gunfire at Tumbru border between noon and 7pm on Monday.
Myanmar shelling has been reported in Tumbru Right area, including Baish outpost in Ghumdhum Bazarpara. Residents have been frightened by the incident.
Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Romain Sharma said: "I have learned about the firing in Rakhine on the Tumbru border from the local representatives. Our border forces are addressing the situation. However, residents on the border are advised not to be panicked."
In September last year, mortar shells from Myanmar landed on the Ghumdhum-Tumbru border in Bandarban. Bangladesh strongly protested the incident, summoning Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh HE U Aung Kyaw Moe to the Foreign Ministry.
"There is heavy firing on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border again since afternoon. The gunshots are too loud, like the sound of a mortar shell. The border residents are in a state of panic over the incident," Shahidul Mia, a resident of Tumbru border said.
Meanwhile, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) could not be reached for comment.
