A workshop on the role of mass media in preventing youth addiction through social media held in the capital on Wednesday morning.
The workshop titled “Role of mass media in preventing addiction of youth to social media” was held in the meeting room of the National Media Institute.
After the various discussions of the panelists at the workshop, Director General (Additional Secretary) of National Media Institute, Nurun Nahar Hena said: "The importance of social media in the current era of globalization is undeniable. However, recent surveys show that social media is having a negative impact on the youth. There is no substitute for raising awareness at the family level to get rid of these harmful effects. The more awareness programs are organized in the media in Bangladesh, the more its benefits will spread to our society.”
Journalist and media personality Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul was present as the main discussant in the workshop chaired by Nurun Nahar Hena.
Md Abu Yusuf, Additional SP (Media), Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) Headquarters, Dhaka, attended the program as a speaker.
The panelists said that excessive addiction to social media is disrupting the physical, mental and intellectual development of the youth. Degradation of values of the youth due to excessive addiction to social media has become a challenge in building a smart Bangladesh of the future.
The speakers in the workshop emphasized on the more effective role of media in building social movements by promoting moral values.
Under the supervision of Dr Md Maruf Nawaz, director of the institute, Deputy Director Mohammad Abu Sadek moderated the program and Deputy Director Sumna Parveen and Assistant Director Saifunnahar were coordinators of the workshop.
