Another accused has been sent to Kurigram jail in connection with the attack on poet Radhapada Roy on September 30.
The accused is Kadur Rahman, son of Mohammad Ali of Kachuapara village in Kurigram’s Nageshwari upazila.
He surrendered before Kurigram Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (Nageshwari Amoli Adalot) on Wednesday afternoon and filed a bail plea.
Judge Ayesha Siddiqa rejected the plea and ordered to send him to jail, said General Registration Officer (GRO) Sajjad Hossain, confirming the matter.
Kadur Rahman is accused number two in the case filed over the attack on Radhapada Roy.
Two brothers - Rafiqul and Kadur Mia had an argument with Radhapada Roy over a previous enmity on September 30.
At one point, Md Rafiqul Islam hit Radhapada Roy with a stick, leaving him injured.
Later, Radhapada Roy's son and relatives rescued him and admitted him to Nageshwari Upazila Health Complex.
His son Jugal Roy filed a case accusing Md Rafiqul Islam and others.
On October 4, the main accused Rafiqul Islam surrendered to the district police. On the same day, he was sent to jail by the court
Eyewitnesses claimed that when Rafiqul pushed poet Radhapada, he fell down on a pile of snails on the side of the road. At that time some local youths were present there.
However, Rafiqul's elder brother Kadur Rahman was not present there, according to witnesses.
Kadur's lawyer Lal Mia Leetu said: "We have applied for bail. The state counsel has argued the case demanding it a sensational issue. The court denied bail and ordered to send him to jail.”
Earlier, Twenty five eminent citizens of the country condemned the attack on poet Radhapada Roy and demanded speedy trial of the attackers.
In a statement issued on October 3, they said the incident of brutality against poet Radhapada Roy is not an isolated event. Almost every day, there are reports of assaults on cultural figures occurring somewhere in the country.
