Second batch of uranium reaches Rooppur plant

A day after the official handing over of the first batch of uranium for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Pabna, the second batch of the nuclear fuel reached Rooppur on Friday.

Vehicles carrying uranium entered the plant shortly after 10am amid tight security.

The second consignment of uranium reached the plant from Dhaka via the Bangabandhu Bridge, Banpara in Natore and Dashuriya in Ishwardi of Pabna.

There was a special security cordon of various law enforcement agencies along with the army on the highway.

Along with this, authorities kept vehicular movement limited on the Pabna-Natore-Kushtia highway from 5am to 10:30am for safety reasons.

Like the first consignment, the imported nuclear fuel was taken by road to Rooppur with maximum security.

Five more consignments will arrive in Bangladesh in phases.

Earlier on September 29, the first batch of uranium reached Rooppur under strict security measures.

Bangladesh marked a historic milestone on Thursday after officially receiving the inaugural shipment of uranium from Russia to feed the country’s first nuclear power plant in Pabna’s Rooppur, solidifying its status as the 33rd nuclear energy nation globally.

The momentous occasion took place at a formal ceremony at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant ground in Ishwardi, in which Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Russian President Vladimir Putin participated virtually, connecting from Ganabhaban and the Kremlin, respectively.
