The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held a rally in Aminbazar on Thursday with a one-point demand to topple the government.
To attend the rally, party leaders and activists from Savar and neighbouring areas had gathered at the ground of the new building of Mirpur Mafid e-Am School and College.
Organized by the BNP's Dhaka district units, the rally began at 2pm.
The leaders and activists at the rally held placards and chanted slogans, demanding the resignation of the government as well as the release of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and other arrested party leaders and activists.
Earlier in the day, a stage was set up on one side of the college ground for the event.
Increased police presence was visible near the Aminbazar bus stand, not far from the rally site.
Heavy traffic caused by leaders and activists travelling to the rally venue via the Dhaka-Aricha highway led to slow vehicle movement on both lanes.
BNP leaders and activists reported that the rally was initially planned to be held last Monday near the Aminbazar Chistia Filling Station.
However, the stage was allegedly destroyed by police on that day, resulting in the postponement of the event.
Consequently, the party decided to organize the rally on Thursday at the Mirpur Mafid e-Am School and College's new building ground.
Under the supervision of Dhaka district BNP General Secretary Nipun Roy Chowdhury, the main guests of the rally include BNP Standing Committee members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Begum Selima Rahman.
Nipun Roy Chowdhury confirmed that the rally has not faced any police interventions so far.
Dhaka District's Additional Police Superintendent Abdullah Hil Kafi said the police are vigilant to ensure no untoward incidents occur centred around the rally.
