A local Jatiaytabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader in Barisal has been sent to jail for defaming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through a Facebook post.
Kaifi Shikder Mimi, joint convener of the Government Gournadi College unit, was arrested by the police and was produced before a district court on Wednesday. The court sent him to jail.
Afzal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gournadi police station, confirmed the matter. He said Kaifi had posted the content on his social media account on September 12.
Later, Zubair Islam Santu Bhuiyan, president of Gournadi Upazila Chhatra League, filed the case under the Speedy Trial Act.
Kaifi had been on the run since the incident but was arrested in Dhaka during a raid by law enforcers.
