Authorities will import potatoes to keep the market normal, if necessary, said AHM Shafiquzzaman, director general of the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection, on Thursday.
"If prices are not stable in two or three days, we will recommend importing potatoes, which will not be good for anyone," he warned.
The director general was talking in a views exchange meeting at the conference room of the deputy commissioner in Nilphamari.
"There is enough potato stock in the country, but cold storage owners are selling potatoes at higher prices instead of being sold at the government-fixed rates. As a result, the price of potatoes has been increasing at the consumer level. But it is not supposed to happen,” he said.
The meeting was presided over by Nilphamari Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Ghosh.
In the meeting, the district administration, district police and consumer rights protection department were instructed to display the government-fixed price charts in every cold storage and ensure the preservation of purchase and sale receipts.
