Pro-BNP lawyers-police clash: High Court grants anticipatory bail to 13

The High Court has granted eight weeks of anticipatory bail to 13 individuals, including BNP Joint Secretary General Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon.

This comes in response to a case filed against the police following a clash with pro-BNP lawyers during a march in the Dhaka Judge Court area.

The High Court bench, comprising Justice Md Zakir Hossain and Justice Md Shaukat Ali Chowdhury, issued the order on Monday after reviewing their application.

The individuals receiving anticipatory bail have also been instructed to surrender at the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court once the bail period concludes.

Other lawyers granted anticipatory bail include BNP Legal Affairs Secretary and Bangladesh Nationalist Lawyers Forum Secretary General Barrister Kaiser Kamal, BNP Central Executive Committee member Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Supreme Court Bar former secretary Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Muhammad Ali, Mahbubur Rahman Khan, Dewan Humayun Kabir Ripon, Al Faisal Siddiqui, Md Qayyum, Md Shahadat Hossain Adil, Russell Ahmed, Mahidul Islam Shipon, and Ashraf Jalal Khan Manon.

The clash with police occurred during the lawyers' march on September 12, resulting in injuries to at least 50 lawyers.

The lawyers had gathered in front of the Dhaka Bar Association to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, the removal of "self-proclaimed sworn politicians" judges, and the unconditional release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Subsequently, the United Lawyers’ Front (ULF), an anti-government lawyers' group, initiated the march from Dhaka Bar Association to the main road, which was met with a police response, leading to the dispersal of the lawyers' march.

The United Lawyers’ Front claimed that at least 50 lawyers were injured during the incident.

Later that night, police filed a case against 66 individuals, including BNP's Joint Secretary General Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and the party's Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kayser Kamal, accusing them of attacking the police during the pro-BNP lawyers' march.

Sub Inspector Md Shahabuddin Hawladar of Kotwali police station of the capital filed the case as the plaintiff.
