Torture of Chhatra League leaders: Suspended ADC Harun attached to Rangpur Range DIG office

Suspended ADC Harun or Rashid of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has been attached to the Rangpur Range DIG office, following allegations of assaulting two central Chhatra League leaders, two transfers in one day and his subsequent suspension.

The Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification in this regard on Tuesday evening.

The notification said the order was issued with the appropriate authority's permission.

Earlier on Monday, the ADC was suspended and assigned to the Police Headquarters.

A notification signed by Ministry of Home Affairs Senior Secretary Md Mostafizur Rahman said ADC Harun has been suspended following Section 39(1) of the Government Service Law, 2018.

He has to refrain from all government activities for the public interest, said the notification.

During the suspension, he is entitled to his salary as per regulations, the notification added.

Meanwhile, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan met with DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq on the same day and demanded justice over the alleged torture.

Initially, the ADC was withdrawn from his post and reassigned to the DMP's Public Order Management Division on Sunday after the allegations surfaced.

According to reports, the incident occurred after ADC Harun took the two Chhatra League leaders to Shahbagh police station on Saturday.

As Chhatra League leaders alleged, on Saturday night, ADC Harun was chatting with a female police officer at Birdem General Hospital.

At that time, the female officer's husband, also a government official, accompanied by the two Chhatra League leaders, arrived at the scene.

An altercation ensued between ADC Harun and the official. Later, Harun took the two Chhatra League leaders to Shahbagh police station, where they were allegedly tortured.

The duo subjected to the alleged torture are Anwar Hossain Nayeem, Chhatra League central organizing secretary and president of the Dhaka University (DU) Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall unit, and Sharif Ahmed Munim, the central science affairs secretary and general secretary of DU Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall unit.
