The government is set to extend the suspension of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's jail sentence by six more months.
Law Minister Anisul Huq told the media that he has extended the suspension of her jail sentence after the former premier's family applied to the home ministry.
This is the eighth time the government has allowed the BNP chief to enjoy the facility on health grounds since 2020.
According to the conditions, Khaleda would not be able to go abroad and she has to take treatment at her residence.
The BNP, however, demands unconditional release of Khaleda Zia, while terming the corruption cases false and politically motivated.
The government released the BNP chief after suspending her jail sentence as per Section 401(1) of the Criminal Code of Procedure (CrPC).
Khaleda was freed from jail on March 25, 2020, after the government suspended her jail sentence for six months. She walked out of jail at a time when the world was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The former prime minister was sent to Old Dhaka Central Jail after she was sentenced to five years' imprisonment by a special court in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case on February 8, 2018.
She was convicted in a second corruption case later.
The 77-year-old BNP chief has been staying at her Gulshan residence since her release. A special team of her personal physicians has been overseeing her treatment.
