In the heart of Dhaka, Bangladesh, lies the enchanting National Botanical Garden, a sprawling oasis that offers respite from the bustling city life. On a warm summer day, August 18, 2023, I embarked on a journey of tranquillity as I stepped into this lush haven. Little did I know that this day would gift me an encounter with the fascinating and vibrant world of the Purple Swamphen.
As I meandered through the winding pathways, lined with a rich tapestry of flora, my eyes caught a vivid burst of colour amidst the green backdrop. Two mature Purple Swamphens, resplendent in their deep blue and purple plumage, stood gracefully by the edge of a tranquil pond. Their iridescent feathers shimmered in the dappled sunlight, a striking contrast to their verdant surroundings.
Captivated by their elegance, I observed as they moved with an air of regal poise. Their long legs, adapted for a semi-aquatic lifestyle, allowed them to tread delicately on the water's edge. With their distinctive bright red bill and shield, they added an exquisite touch to the natural tableau.
As I continued to watch, my attention shifted to a nearby patch of reeds. Amongst the swaying foliage, I made out the presence of six juveniles—the offspring of these magnificent adults. With their fluffy, charcoal-grey down feathers and slightly awkward movements, the young Purple Swamphens were a testament to the cycle of life in this lush habitat.
The family dynamic was truly a sight to behold. The adults took turns foraging in the shallows, their keen eyes searching for aquatic plants, insects, and small aquatic creatures. With gentle coos and occasional squabbles, they communicated and cared for their brood, imparting essential survival skills that would one day lead these juveniles to navigate the world on their own.
Armed with my camera, I endeavoured to capture every fleeting moment of this avian spectacle. The lens focused on the intricate details of their plumage, the glint in their eyes, and the tender interactions that unfolded before me. The camera's click resonated softly against the backdrop of the serene garden, freezing these moments in time.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden hue over the garden, I reluctantly tore my gaze away from this avian family. With a heart full of wonder, I walked away, leaving behind the Purple Swamphens and their picturesque abode. These creatures, so emblematic of the delicate balance of nature, had granted me a glimpse into their lives, reminding me of the intricate beauty that thrives in even the most unexpected corners of our world.
This year’s August 18 will forever remain etched in my memory as the day I witnessed the vibrant elegance of the Purple Swamphen and the story they shared with me in the tranquil embrace of the National Botanical Garden in Dhaka.
