A Bangladeshi youth was shot dead by members of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Chakpara border of Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Bablu Haque, 25.
The incident took place at the Chakpara-Unishbighi border of the upazila’s Shahbajpur union on Tuesday night.
Ismail Haque Sayem, a ward member of Shahbajpur union on Wednesday claimed that deceased Bablu Hauqe was mentally impaired and had been roaming in the area for a while.
“I was informed in the morning that Bablu was shot by the BSF and they took his body,” he said.
“Later, I was confirmed of his identity through photographs which were later sent from India,” he added.
Shahbajpur Union Parishad Chairman Mohammad Nizamul Haque said he was informed about Bablu Haque’s death and has sent people for further details.
Bablu Haque’s brother, Sajibul Haque, said Bablu left home on Tuesday afternoon and did not return.
“He was shot around 9pm at the Chakpara border. His identity was confirmed through photographs received from India,” he said.
“My family was later told to bring documents to the BGB camp,” he added.
Chapainawabganj 59 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Golam Kibria said they heard about a Bangladeshi youth being shot dead along the border; however, they could not confirm his identity.
“His body is in India. Once his identity is confirmed, a flag meeting will be held with BSF to protest the shooting along with the return of his body,” he added.
