Cox’s Bazar police on Tuesday said Awami League leader Saif Uddin, who was found dead at a hotel in Cox’s Bazar on Monday, was killed over sexual assault.
Following the detention of madrasa student Ashraful Islam in connection with the murder, Cox's Bazar Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Mahfuzul Islam disclosed this information at a press briefing in his own office.
The SP said Ashraful was introduced to Saif Uddin through a relative.
On Sunday evening, they purchased local alcohol and guava from the city’s Boro Bazar and then went to room 208 of the Hotel Sunmoon at Holiday Mor in Cox's Bazar.
At one point, when Ashraful became drunk after consuming the local alcohol, Saif Uddin sexually assaulted him and recorded it on his mobile phone.
Later, Saif Uddin dropped Ashraful off in the Goldighir Par area on his motorcycle.
An hour later, Saif called Ashraful back to the hotel, where he attempted to sexually assault him again.
At one point, in retaliation for the sexual abuse, Ashraful murdered Saif Uddin and fled the hotel.
Mahfuzul Islam further said the police arrested Ashraful Islam while he was fleeing from Cox’s Bazar to Teknaf via Ukhiya. Ashraful was identified through the hotel’s CCTV footage.
Whykong police apprehended him around 12:40am on Monday, he said.
Later, a murder case was filed at Cox’s Bazar Sadar model police station on Tuesday evening.
When presented in court, Ashraful confessed to the murder of Awami League leader Saif Uddin, Mahfuzul Islam added.
Saif Uddin, 45, was the information and research affairs secretary of Cox's Bazar municipal Awami League.
Police found his body with his hands and feet tied from behind.
