The Jamaat-e-Islami leader and convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee passed away on Monday night while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). He was 83.
The convicted war criminal died at the hospital at 8:40pm.
His son Masood Sayedee confirmed the matter in a Facebook post.
Brig Gen Dr Md Rezaur Rahman, director (hospital) of BSMMU also confirmed the death.
Sayedee suffered cardiac arrest two times. The doctors tried their best, he added.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expressed grief over the death of their leader.
“Allama Delawar Hossain Sayedee, one of the leaders of the world Islamic movement, an internationally renowned scholar and author of many books, passed away at 8:40pm today (Monday) at PG Hospital in Dhaka,” the party said in a Facebook post.
Sayedee was first taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital on Sunday afternoon from Dhaka Central Jail-1 at Kashimpur after he felt chest pain.
At around 5pm, he was referred to BSMMU for better treatment.
On Feb 8, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Sayedee to death for war crimes committed in the 1971 Liberation War. Clashes erupted between the police and Jamaat supporters left at least 35 people dead while scores were injured in protest following the death sentence.
The Supreme Court on Sept 17, 2014 reduced the punishment from death sentence to life imprisonment following a petition by Sayedee.
