Swechchhasebak League leader succumbs to gunshot wound at DMCH

A Swechchhasebak League leader critically injured in an armed attack in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia on August 2 died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday morning.

The deceased was Sanjay Pramanik, 37, president of Bheramara municipality Swechchhasebak League.

Sanjay Pramanik succumbed to his injuries around 8:30am at DMCH, said Bheramara police station Officer-in-Charge Md Jahurul Islam.

Local people of Bheramara upazila became agitated hearing the news of his death.

Activists held a protest by burning tyres on the Kushtia-Daulatpur regional highway demanding strict punishment for those involved in the attack.

All the shops in the local market were closed by leaders and activists of Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League and Chhatra League – all affiliates of the ruling Awami League.

Additional forces were deployed to keep the situation under control, said the OC.

Earlier, on August 2, when Sanjay was returning home with some people after attending a party meeting, a group of people, led by local Jubo Jote (the youth wing of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal) sports affairs secretary Mustafizur Rahman Shovon, attacked him over a previous dispute.

The attackers opened fire and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

Two Swechchhasebak League workers, Belal Hossain alias Ripon, 36, and Shyamol Ali, 35, were injured in the attack.

Later, locals rescued the injured and took them to Bheramara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors referred them to Kushtia General Hospital. However, from there Sanjay was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment on Friday.

On August 3, Sanjay’s wife Bithi Rani Dey filed a case with Bheramara Police Station accusing 14 people including Jubo Jote leader Mustafizur Rahman Shovon.

OC Md Jahurul Islam said five people, including Shovon, are currently in custody. The other accused are on bail.
