Full verdict in graft case against Aman, his wife released

Senior BNP leader Amanullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman have to surrender in court in two separate corruption cases as the High Court on Monday released the full verdict, rejecting appeals against jail sentences.

According to the High Court verdict, the couple has been asked to surrender before the lower court concerned within 15 days of receiving the copy of the verdict.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat published the 281-page full verdict.

The short verdict was pronounced on May 30 this year after dismissing the appeals filed by Aman and Sabera against the lower court verdicts.

The cases were filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income in 2007.

On June 21, 2007, a special court sentenced Aman to 13 years in jail for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in his wealth statement. His wife Sabera was also sentenced to three years by the same court as she was found guilty of helping in the offence.

In August 2010, following an appeal filed by the couple, the High Court acquitted them of the graft charges.

On May 26, 2014, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court cancelled the HC verdict and asked it to hold a fresh hearing on their appeals.
