Experts call for invention of dengue vaccine; testing centres in every ward

Experts suggested introducing dengue testing centres in ward levels across Bangladesh including invention of vaccines as well to combat dengue situation.

Mentioning that to prevent dengue, only campaigns and press conferences are not enough, the  negotiators advised to start dengue testing centers in each district and upazila health centres, increase investment in entomologists and carry out research at city corporation and municipal levels, as well as government and private sector initiatives.

The negotiators said this at a discussion meeting titled "Dengue spread in the context of environmental and social impact" under the initiative of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa) at Dhaka Reporters Unity at around 10:30am on Sunday.

At that time, Bapa presented nine proposals at the meeting.

Speakers at the meeting mentioned climate change as the result of unplanned urbanization and deforestation in the country. Due to the impact of this climate change, various diseases are increasing worldwide. Most patients with dengue do not have any symptoms. Due to the fact that the testing centre is very small compared to the number of infected people, accurate data on the number of cases and deaths is not available.

As a result, significant research could not be carried out, said the speakers.

They think that dengue is a completely preventable disease, so they call for research and development of vaccines in the country.

At the same time, dengue testing centres should be started in every health centre in every ward of the country to prevent dengue. Those who will be dengue positive should be given special treatment, they suggested.

Earlier, Architect Iqbal Habib said in his article that dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease. Out of 126 species of mosquitoes found in Bangladesh, 26 are Aedes of which two species - Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the main carriers of dengue virus.

Among the four types of dengue (Dengue-1, Dengue-2, Dengue-3 and Dengue-4), Dengue-2 and Dengue-3 have been more prevalent in the country over the years, he said.

Ten more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Sunday morning, raising the fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 313 this year. During the period, 2,764 more patients were hospitalized with the viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
