Mosquito control: DNCC to use Bti bacteria from Sunday

The Dhaka North City Corporation will apply Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) pesticide to destroy mosquito larvae from Sunday, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam has said.

"After completing all procedures, we were able to bring the insecticide Bti from Singapore, which destroys mosquito larvae. An expert team from Singapore will talk to the health department of the DNCC on Friday and Saturday,” he said on Thursday, reports UNB.

“Our officials will learn from the expert team how the Bti pesticide will be mixed and how and where it will be used. Bti will be applied in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) area from Sunday,” he said while addressing a meeting on reviewing activities undertaken to prevent dengue spread, at the conference room of Nagar Bhaban on Thursday.

Before the start of the meeting, a public awareness rally was held in front of Nagar Bhaban with placards containing five instructions from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on how to prevent dengue.

The mayor, along with Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tajul Islam, took part in the rally.

Bti is a group of bacteria employed as a biological control agent for the larval stages of specific dipteran species. Toxins produced by Bti are effective in eliminating a variety of mosquito species.
