BNP briefs foreign diplomats, alleges hostile political situation for fair polls

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has conveyed its concerns over the current political situation to foreign diplomats, stating that the conditions are not conducive to fair elections in the country.

In a meeting with representatives from 22 countries at a hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon, the BNP delegation detailed attacks carried out on its leaders and activists, including during the party's sit-in program on Saturday.

The party also highlighted what it described as oppressive activities by government forces, including police, Ansar, and RAB, against its peaceful demonstration at the entrance of Dhaka.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said: “We have informed the diplomats about the current political situation of the country.”

“We have said that the government carried out attacks on July 29 to create fear with the parliamentary election ahead,” he elaborated.

He said they also told the foreign envoys that cases were filed against those who were subjected to attacks and repression.

"Even cases were filed against individuals who were deceased," said Amir Khasru.

“The foreign diplomats want democracy in this country, that is why we presented the whole issue to them,” he said.

“People, who believe in democracy and want to see democracy, democratic order and human rights in Bangladesh, need to know these issues,” he added.
