Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has urged political parties to sit at a table to resolve their disputes.
He said this to reporters after an hour-long meeting with US Ambassador Peter Haas at his election office on Tuesday.
“A favorable environment is needed for the election. The crisis is political. It has nothing to do with our work. But if these problems are resolved politically, it will be very comfortable for us to hold elections,” Kazi Habibul Awal said.
The CEC said: "The commission expects that many issues that are clearly discussed in the political arena need to be resolved at all costs. We want stability to return. The next election will be held in a stable environment.”
Although the EC did not take initiative on dialogue, the CEC called for dialogue among themselves and sitting together.
He added: "The US also believes dialogue is needed between politicians (to solve the problem). Without dialogue, these crises are not really about being resolved on the streets. The commission feels that political parties should sit at one table and drink tea together. Then we should try to resolve the crisis by discussing.”
